Tires are the only part of the car connected to the road. As such, they constitute one of the most important replacement part decisions you can make. Tires last an average of 68,000 km, much less if you drive on specialized tires designed for high performance in summer, winter or wet weather. In addition, tires should be rotated every 10,000 km, always have the correct tire pressure and should be cleaned regularly to ensure road debris is not lodged in the tread blocks.

Tires are a heavy wear item and should be checked regularly.

Tire Wear

Warning Signs

• Visible tread wear
• Rough vehicle ride
• Punctures, cuts, snags, etc.
• Gradual air loss
• Bent or cracked wheel rim
• Poor handling, especially on wet surfaces
• Poor traction in rain or snow

Tires should be replaced when there is 2/32" or less of tread depth remaining. At this point, they have become unsafe for driving under any circumstances.

Spotting Tread Wear

You'll know it's time to replace your tires when the wear band is visible through the treads. It's also a good idea to check your tires regularly for uneven tread wear. The images below should help you recognize various problems.

Toe Wear

A thin inner or outer edge may indicate an alignment problem.

Camber Wear

Extreme inner or outer edge wear may indicate an alignment problem.

Centre Wear

Thin thread in the centre of your tire may be a sign of overinflation.

Edge Wear

Thin tread wear along both edges may be caused by underinflation.

Patch Wear

Patchy tread wear or random flat spots could mean your tires are out of balance.

Cup Wear

Repetitive diagonal tread wear could mean you have a bent or worn suspension component.
